At Carver we stopped to return some overdue books.

And at Chapman we picked up some nice donations and surprised the daughter of Shannon’s partner….

A great ride, brilliant weather, and good company. Brian and Gary from the SHJ contributed plenty of comic relief, Shannon and Eric led us to some cool alternative routes between schools, and we stopped by the hospital for a quick visit with Cliff Hendrix for a poignant reminder of what the Tour de 7 is all about.

Ride stats from my computer:

Total Distance – 40.7 miles

Total ascent – 2462 feet

Maximum Speed – 35mph

Total time – 5 hours, 20 minutes!

The Tour de 7 began in May 2007 when I decided to join the ride to Pine Street Elementary on Bike to School Day.

I live so close to Pine Street that getting geared up for such a short ride seemed almost silly, so I decided to ride to every school in District 7 and make it a fund-raising event to benefit the Partners for Active Living (the ‘Bike to School’ sponsors).

With just 48-hours notice, folks at the district schools gave $500, and the ride to each school to collect donations became a 32-mile circuit.

A 32-mile solo ride gives one time to think, and at some point on the road I decided to make the ride an annual event and raise money for a different cause each year.

Notes & Plans:

Raise more money – the goal for 2009 will be $2500.

Grow the event by having more riders who will raise a set minimum amount.

In 2009 the Td7 will raise money for the Children’s Advocacy Center of Spartanburg.
